How Far Can Your Desk Actually Hear? — A Receive-Only Shortwave Post That Logs Whispers From Other Continents

Everything you own that talks to the world does it through somebody else's infrastructure. Your messages travel through cell towers, undersea cables, and data centres you will never see, and if any link in that chain goes quiet you have no way to know whether the problem is you, your street, or the far end. Shortwave radio is the one exception left: the ionosphere is a mirror that nobody owns, it is repaired every morning by the sun, and on any given night it will carry a signal weaker than the noise in your own room across an ocean. This project is how you prove that to yourself with evidence instead of folklore. By the end you will not merely believe that a wire on your windowsill can hear another continent — you will have a database that says which continent, at which hour, on which band, from a transmitter running less power than a Christmas-tree bulb, cross-checked against receivers on the other side of the world that heard the same two-minute transmission you did. That is a rare kind of knowledge. It is also the most honest possible introduction to the idea that absence of a signal is itself a measurement.

What you'll do

A permanently running, receive-only shortwave listening post you own outright — a direct-sampling SDR on a wire antenna feeding a headless WSPR decoder that Claude Code wrapped in a supervisor, a band rotation, and a SQLite log — that records every whisper it decodes (transmitter, grid square, transmit power, signal-to-noise, frequency drift, clock offset) *and* every two-minute window in which it heard nothing, converts each grid square into a real great-circle distance in kilometres and a kilometres-per-watt efficiency figure, proves its own decodes are genuine by matching them against independent receivers in the public wspr.live database, renders the whole night as one self-contained offline HTML page showing distance against hour and band, and never transmits or uploads anything.
